The Roger Moore Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society and the Upland Habitat Conservancy teamed up with the Michigan DNR’s Tim Riley to complete a tree planting project to support ruffed grouse and many other species on public land in the north woods of Michigan. Members of both organizations collaborated for this hands-on effort, planting prairie fire crabapple trees along the edge of grouse coverts.

The impact of these plantings will reach far beyond the small immediate areas they have been placed. Grouse and other woodland creatures from miles will benefit as these have been strategically placed to support a network of upland habitat. All folks involved in this project are dedicated to this type of “boots on the ground” approach for the betterment of habitat. We do it for the birds.

These folks braved wet and cool weather to plant trees and erect protective barriers which give them ample time to grow and thrive. After the work was completed, these dedicated volunteers enjoyed a fine lunch around a campfire. New friends were made, future plans for projects were hashed out, and a great time of giving back to habitat was had by all.
